I finally got there

Post  ElegantLion on Wed Jul 01, 2009 5:46 pm

With less than 24 hours left I made it! I discovered a few things along the way.

1. It's not easier to write in June than November. I'm a homeschool mom and I thought the whole we're-out-of-school-I'll-have-more-free-time thing would be in my favor, it was not.

2. When you're writing in a genre and with characters that aren't as familiar to you it might be a good idea to plot a little more. Otherwise they end up singing camp songs to add to your word count.

3. Don't get sick during any month you are writing a nano. four days in bed being sick ate at my momentum.

4. Find a place to take your computer and hide. My bedroom with the door shut was great for the last three days of June. It wouldn't have helped to lock it, my son can pick the lock.

5. Don't forget to look at the oddities of the world as you write, it might just give you some good ideas

6. Lastly, while you're zoned out on benadryl and spending time in bed, keep a notebook beside your bed. Those weird hallucinating type of dreams might just come in handy.

Congrats.

7. When all else fails, start writing a brand new short story to add to your word count. If you run out of momentum on that, start another one. Eventually, you'll have 7 beginnings, and 50,000 words.

Too bad the herd of chirping squirrels that invaded my yard didn't happen until the first. They would have made a nice interlude. Seriously twelve squirrels running around climbing up and down trees like little lunatics. I was waiting for them to rush me and gouge my eyes out or something.

(note to self, always carry camera when going in yard, even if it's just to take out the trash)
